7.1.21
Annexure B
p. 42
Medical Aid - the consumer
Medical Aid - the consumer should be appropriately covered in relation to his income and family needs.
NDRC Practice NoteLast reviewed 2026-04
What this means in practice
Medical aid premiums are permitted at the actual debited amount where the cover matches household need. A scheme upgrade during the rearrangement is treated as a discretionary increase and pushed back to surplus.
Where it goes wrong
Dropping medical cover to free up cash for creditors is rarely accepted. Credit providers know the household will end up with hospital bills they cannot pay, which destabilises the rearrangement.
