How long does it take to be removed from Debt Review in South Africa?
Category: The Process
The time depends entirely on which removal method applies.
Clearance Certificate (Section 71): 7 to 21 business days total
• Once all accounts are settled or only a current home loan remains, your debt counsellor issues the Clearance Certificate within 7 days of confirming settlement.
• Credit bureaus update your profile within 21 business days of receiving the certificate.
Section 87 Court Application: 3 to 6 months
• Court application drafting: 2 to 4 weeks.
• The application must be served on all creditors at least 20 business days before the court date. This statutory waiting period accounts for a full calendar month on its own.
• Court dates are allocated by the court, typically 6 to 10 weeks ahead.
• Once the order is granted, DHS update takes same day to 7 business days under NCR Circular 09 of 2025.
• Credit bureaus update within 21 business days of confirmed DHS update.
• Total: 4 to 6 months. Courts with heavy case loads or matters that require postponement take longer.
What slows the process:
• Previous debt counsellor is unreachable, deregistered, or refuses to provide documents.
• Credit providers delay providing balances or documentation.
• Court postponements.
• Incomplete documentation requiring supplementary affidavits.
