Yes. Once your debt review flag has been removed and all four credit bureaus reflect your updated status, you are legally free to apply for loans and credit. Section 88 of the NCA, which restricted your right to enter new credit agreements while under debt review, no longer applies.
Being legally eligible to apply does not guarantee approval. Credit providers assess your application based on their own affordability and credit risk criteria:
• Your current credit score, which may be lower than average following a period of debt review.
• Your credit history, particularly any default listings, judgments, or negative payment profile information beyond the debt review flag.
• Your current income and expense profile.
• The type of loan, as unsecured personal loans are assessed differently to vehicle finance or home loans.
Realistic timelines for credit access after removal:
• Small personal loans and store accounts: accessible within 1 to 3 months of removal if your credit score is rebuilding.
• Vehicle finance: accessible within 3 to 6 months, subject to income and deposit.
• Home loans: accessible 6 to 12 months after removal, with most lenders requiring a demonstrated period of positive credit history.
Obtain your credit reports from all four major bureaus approximately 30 days after removal to verify the flag is gone and identify any other negative information that may affect applications. A small store account paid on time each month accelerates credit score recovery.
