If I believe my credit report contains inaccurate information regarding debt review, what can I do?

    Information, What Can I Do?

TITLE: Disputing Incorrect Debt Review Information on Your Credit Report | NDRC | META: You have the right to dispute incorrect debt review information on your credit report. Learn how to file a dispute and what NDRC can do to help.

If your credit report incorrectly reflects a debt review status, for example showing you as under debt review when you have never applied, or still showing the flag after it should have been removed, you have the legal right to dispute it and have it corrected.

Step 1: Obtain your credit reports

Pull your credit reports from all four major bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, XDS, and VCCB. You are entitled to one free report per year from each. Compare each report to identify where the incorrect information appears.

Step 2: Lodge a dispute directly with the credit bureau

Each bureau has a disputes process. Submit a formal dispute in writing specifying the incorrect information and providing evidence of the correct position, for example your clearance certificate, court order, or NCR confirmation of status update.

    • TransUnion: www.transunion.co.za/disputes

    • Experian: www.experian.co.za/disputes

    • XDS: www.xds.co.za

    • VCCB: viafinance.co.za

Step 3: Lodge a complaint with the NCR

If the dispute with the credit bureau is not resolved, lodge a formal complaint with the NCR at [email protected] or 0860 627 627. The NCR has authority to investigate and direct credit bureaus to correct incorrect debt review listings.

Step 4: Contact the Credit Ombud

The Credit Ombud at www.creditombud.org.za handles disputes between consumers and credit bureaus or credit providers as an independent mediator.

If you were placed under debt review without your knowledge or consent, for example if you were misled into signing documents you did not understand, NDRC can assist with a formal complaint process and the removal of the incorrect listing.
