What is Form 17.1 in debt counselling?

Form 17.1 is the official application form to apply for debt counselling under the National Credit Act. When you sign this form, you are officially entering the debt review process.

By signing Form 17.1, you are:

    • Officially applying for debt review

    • Authorizing the debt counsellor to act on your behalf

    • Confirming your personal and financial information

    • Acknowledging that you believe you are over-indebted

Once signed, your debt counsellor submits Form 17.1 to all your credit providers and credit bureaus, triggering the 60-business-day protection period during which creditors cannot take legal action against you.
